Lamtsu Capital City

Lamtsu (楠梓区, Nanshi-Ku) is a Special Ward in Lamtsu Capital City, Sorano. The ward refers to itself as Lamtsu City in English. As of 2022, Lamtsu City has a population of 308,209. However, due to the amount of government buildings and businesses in the area, they daytime population is closer to 650,000.

Lamtsu is the Administrative Capital of Sorano, housing the Sorano Parliament, Lamtsu City Hall, and other administrative buildings. Lamtsu (using the Cantonese reading), originally Nanshi Port, inherited the name Lamtsu from the peninsula, the Lamtsu area. As the port town later grew into a city, Nanshi Port was renamed Lamtsu City in 1919, when the administrative functions of Sorano were officially moved to Lamtsu. Although Misato City continued to be the official political capital, the Sorano Parliament sat in the building in Lamtsu City due to the lack of space in central Misato.

Lamtsu City gets it's name from the peninsula, which was named by Soranese in the 14th century, naming it after the Camphor Trees and Catalpas that were native to the region.

Geography

Lamtsu City occupies a portion of the waterfront, sandwiched between Misato and Yamate cities. Much of the land on the west is reclaimed, with the Sorano Parliament and much of the land at least 700m to the east being reclaimed land.

History

800AD - 1942 AD

Lamtsu City started out as Nanshi Port, having a very gentle sandbank on the delta of the Misato River, that allowed for easy unloading and loading of cargo onto primative boats. Nanshi dates back to the 8th century, with Sorano trade records indicating trade with the Misato Kingdom going via Lamtsu City.

In Misato Kingdom records dating to the 12th century, Lamtsu Port was a very important trade hub for the products produced by the Kingdom. Named products included crops and such.

Nanshi Port was razed by the Sorano conquest of the Misato Kingdom in 1359 AD, when it was used as a landing for the Sorano boats. However, it was rebuilt shortly afterwards, with Nanshi becoming the primary port for the Lamtsu Peninsula again by 1364. Nanshi Port was made a town of it's own in 1668, when the Misato Fire resulted in the emmirgation and displacement of close to 800,000 people. Nanshi was then renamed Lamtsu Town, while the Japanese pronounciation still was "Nanshi".

1942-Today

From 1942-1945, Lamtsu City became the administrative capital of the Lamtsu Region during the Japanese Occupation. Lamtsu Capital City was formed officially in 1952, when Lamtsu City became the administrative hub of the capital due to the location of the Parliament. Later buildings were moved to Lamtsu as well over the years.

The Nanshi Port was demolished in 1994, when the Tsubetsu Container Terminal opened. The portlands that had been reclaimed from 1945 to 1987 were redeveloped into the Waterfront Business District.

Transportation

Lamtsu is home to the Lamtsu Station, which is the central intercity terminal of Lamtsu. All the Shinkansen Lines terminate at Lamtsu Station. Lamtsu is also home to Ginza Station, which is the central station of the Lamtsu Metro.
